BillingsWorks and Big Sky Economic Development’s Community Development present Better Off in Billings. This one of a kind event brings two important subjects together in one day. First, find out the “state of the workforce” in our area. The data will be presented by Karen Baumgart, Director of BillingsWorks and Dr. Bryce Ward, Economic Researcher from BBER at the University of Montana. Karen will present the local data from our recent State of the Workforce Employer survey, industry focus groups, and local data. Then Bryce will take that new data and compare it to many of our competing communities, showing the comparisons for cost of living, housing, safety, education, commute time and more. Learn if you really are Better Off in Billings!
The second part of the day will take a look at “strategic placemaking”. These are key projects in our community that our residents are driving and are also driving new talent to our market. See what has been accomplished and what is yet to come with a full visual display of over 20 “in the ground” or “on the cusp” projects in Yellowstone County. Also, during this time we will announce the winners of the 1st Annual Space to Place contest.
Next, a panel of local experts will discuss the extraordinary work being done in the area of strategic placemaking followed by a panel of innovators and business experts to discuss the important link between talent attraction and strategic placemaking.
We will conclude the day with Keynote speaker John T. Reuter of Strong Towns. Strong Towns is a media organization leading a national movement for change. Their goal is to provide an approach for adapting a community’s unique needs for growth and to inspire people to ask different questions about the way their towns are built.
This event is fully sponsored by Avitus Group and KLJ and is being presented at no charge to attendees.
